Philanthropist Jim Crown dies in car crash


Jim Crown, the chief executive of Henry Crown & Co. and grandson of industrialist Henry Crown, died on Sunday in a car crash at the Aspen Motorsports Park in Woody Creek, Colorado. Crown had just turned 70 and was participating in a single-vehicle accident when his race car hit a wall going around a curve. The Pitkin County coroner’s office has stated that the official cause of death is pending autopsy, but multiple blunt force trauma is evident.

Crown was involved in philanthropy and had recently announced a campaign to rally business leaders to aid in the fight against violent crime in Chicago. His father, financier Lester Crown, expressed his grief over his loss: “There never was a finer human being in every way. He was the leader of our family both intellectually and emotionally, and he looked out for everybody. He also was a great leader also for the community. It’s just a heartfelt loss. There are no words that can express it.”

Remembering Jim Crown

Crown had an impressive resume of corporate and nonprofit roles, including serving as lead director at General Dynamics Corp. and as a director at JPMorgan Chase. He was also a trustee and committee member for organizations such as the Aspen Institute and the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago. Additionally, he was a member of the board of trustees at the University of Chicago and was appointed to the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board by then-President Barack Obama.

Born in Chicago in 1953, Crown earned a bachelor’s in political science from Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass. and a law degree from Stanford Law School.

Crown’s family released a statement asking for privacy at this difficult time and will release information later about plans for a memorial to honor his remarkable life.
