Air Liquide to Build Carbon Capture Unit in Rotterdam

0

Air Liquide (Paris:AI) has made an announcement regarding the construction of a world-scale carbon capture unit in the industrial basin of Rotterdam, the Netherlands. This project will make use of their proprietary Cryocap(TM) technology. The carbon capture unit will be installed at Air Liquide’s hydrogen production plant located in the port of Rotterdam and will be connected to Porthos, one of Europe’s largest carbon capture and storage infrastructures, with the aim of significantly reducing CO(2) emissions in this industrial area.

The captured CO(2) will come from Air Liquide’s existing hydrogen plant in Rotterdam, utilizing their Cryocap(TM) technology, which employs a cryogenic process for CO(2) capture. Once captured, the CO(2) will be transported through the developing Porthos infrastructure and stored permanently in depleted gas fields in the North Sea, approximately 20 kilometers from the coast. The carbon capture unit is expected to become operational by 2026. This project will allow Air Liquide to provide significantly decarbonized hydrogen to its long-term customers as per their contracts.

With the implementation of the Porthos infrastructure, emissions in the region will decrease by 2.5 million tons of CO(2) per year, amounting to approximately 10% of the current CO(2) emissions from Rotterdam’s industrial sector. The European Union has recognized Porthos as a crucial cross-border infrastructure project that contributes to achieving energy and climate policy objectives. As a result, it has included Porthos in the list of Projects of Common Interest.

Emilie Mouren-Renouard, member of Air Liquide’s Executive Committee and Chief Executive Officer of the Europe Industries Hub, expressed her satisfaction with this progress, stating, “We are pleased to take another concrete step towards decarbonizing one of Europe’s largest industrial basins while actively participating in the development of Porthos. This new world-scale CO2 capture unit showcases our expertise and commitment to implementing decarbonization solutions, both for our customers and our own assets, aligning with the Group’s ADVANCE strategic plan to reduce its CO2 emissions by 33% by 2035.”
